Keepsake

Compassionate vet tech Jane Ebben creates beautiful horsehair and ribbon mementoes to give to the owners of horses who pass away at the University of Missouri’s College of Veterinary Medicine. Link

(NB: I posted this a couple of hours before I heard about Barbaro; I’m not being a ghoul. Honest)

Pilchuck Veterinary Hospital’s Equine Division (Snohomish, WA) has some great vet-techs that will create horsehair (tail) key-chain mementos with ribbons and charms for the owner when a horse is euthanized. I have two, from two great mares that I was privileged to own. They give me a modicum of comfort, and bring back good memories.

I just heard about Barbaro. What a tragedy that such a brave horse was brought down after such a hard fight. I was sure that his good nature and fighting spirit would prevail. Sigh.

I think horsehair braids are a great idea. Check out these pretty horse hair bracelets at I found at cottagetails.com.

Cottage Tails creates Custom Horsehair Bracelets; memory and honor bracelets from braided horsehair using your own horse’s tail or choosing from our Cottage Tails stock.

I think this is a great idea. I had to put my 28 year old horse down at the end of November and had previously cut some of his tail so I could have a reminder of the great horse he was. Unfortunately it was only a matter of time before we had to put him down and I knew that my thoughts wouldn’t be on collecting a momento from him for myself but now at least I know what to do with it. Such a simple idea but I would never have thought of it. Thanks again, and this is a great blog keep up the good work!
