A close call in Australia

Triple dead heat

After making worldwide headlines 20 years ago when three horses dead heated for a win, the Stony Creek track in the Gippsland region of Victoria came within an inch of doing it again.

Yesterday three runners in the Snap Finance Handicap (1007m) hit the line locked together in an incredible photo finish.

The judge took a while to declare the numbers 4-1-2 – with Sir Woody (inside) beating Lord of Lauriston (outside) by a nose. Flamin’ Unreal (middle) was third, another nose away.

For the record the winner was ridden by Logan McGill and trained by trans-Tasman horseman John Wheeler.

Great photo! As one of the owners of Flamin’ Unreal can I ask where you found it?
This is not the first time the ‘big fella’ has missed out by a nose, and on several rides
he’s be in a photo to sort out the top 5! Flamin Frustrating should be his name, as we
always get the lesser placings in such finishes.

It was a heart stopper!

Hi LInda,

Wow, how neat to hear from you! That must have been a hell of a finish to see in person. As for the photo, just click on the word “Link” at the end; that’s where I got it. 🙂 Can’t remember how I came across the story.
